My medicine name from the mountain:
Rainbow Root Starlight
On August 20th, 2025, I found myself on vision quest up on Mt Shasta—spending 24 hours by myself in the wilderness of the mountain, where there's bears walking around, and sleeping under the stars on a tarp. I had my medicine tools with me, a staff, blanket, drum and rattle, and a handmade rainbow pouch with 5 medicine wheel stones—tools I learned from Star Clan, a Native American lineage fire that I'm now a part of.
It's hard to put into words how an experience like that changes you.
Then there's how I got here, and how do you even end up on an adventure like this? I've never been an "outdoorsy" person, really. Yet, here I found myself, on the mountain.
It was really hard, and also an incredible experience. I got stung twice by a yellow jacket after accidentally disturbing someone’s pine cone home. That part was really quite scary. They were hanging out on my blanket for a while and watching me very closely. I had to do my best to make amends with the yellow jackets and convince them that I was okay.
It was really hot during the day. In the low 90s (~33°C), and I was out in full sun. I had found a great spot with a full view of the stars on the edge of a mountain ridge, but didn't think about how grueling it would be in full sun all day.
I made a makeshift tent out of a space blanket propped up by my staff to keep the sun off of me best I could, and carefully rationed my water. I still got sunburned, and heat rashed, and quite dehydrated, but I was okay. There were really big flies and buzzy things. Lots of grass hoppers. A preying mantis hanging out on a blade of grass! That was very cool to see up close.
When the sun finally went down, I felt so relieved, I welcomed the night. As the stars filled the sky, encircled by a halo of trees—I remembered why I picked this spot. The stars were glorious. The sky was especially dark, being near the new moon and farther from the lights of the city. You could see the milky way streaked across the sky and shooting stars on occasion. I was all giddy excited under my blanket. I brought my glasses with me, just so I could see the stars better.
There was a big bright star in the center of the sky. I started singing a song that came to me in the moment, as I stared into the light of the star. I imagined a rainbow spiral going into the mountain, into the Earth, and the star glowing with a rainbow halo as I sang:
"Rainbow rooted starlight, shine your light, shine with a halo of rainbow light."
I sang my heart out on the mountain. I offered myself in service, wanting to help, wanting to make a difference, and asked for support and guidance in showing me my path in a vision. When I fell asleep that night, the mountain answered in a dream. I woke up and still remembered everything, just blown away that that just happened. I went to the mountain top and had a profound vision.
A bear also walked by during the night, but I stayed pretty chill. I'm sure the bear heard me singing. I figured any animal would probably be more freaked out if I freaked out, so I'm better off just being like, "hey, bear." There was a baby deer that came by during the day, and I think that helped me stay calm—when the bear walked by, I was like, "oh, it's probably just a baby deer."
Animist Daoism — Community of Practice
mentor: Eve Bradford (thevitalweave.com)
Practicing "resourced sensitivity" — sensitivity with a strong root that knows itself to be embedded in a larger ecology of life, and can be sensitive to what is happening and engage in the world, and at the same time, remain rooted. By tending to the intactness of the relationship between the seed of the soul (Jing) and the expression (Qi), listening and flowing from the soul, we can align with the blooming that our seed was meant to be.

For anyone who really knows me, I have a deep rabbit hole obsession with Ancient Egypt stuff— shelves full of books, taking lots of classes. I've also been in deep study and daily practice with the Book of Doors since 11/8/2024, a divination deck by Athon Veggi and Alison Davidson where each card is a doorway to one of 64 neteru of Ancient Egypt. Neteru means "natures" as in the natures of the life force.
Since both Egyptian and Daoist systems describe cycles and processes of living forces, weaving these together has been quite illuminating. It's like having two different lenses and ontologies describing the same phenomena that help you understand the shape of what's being described. There's also a way in which the Ancient Egyptian knowledge is recoverable—the drawings on the temples walls of the neteru often describe phenomena we have direct experience of, because we are living beings too. For example, the Amduat describes the process of a soul's becoming.
I started teaching Egyptian Divination this year, which is a whole new experience for me, but I'm really quite good at this.
